Design a CRM Field for Contradictory Evidence
Store contradictory evidence in a claim table with explicit conflict states, resolution history and decision-specific blocking rules.

When credible sources disagree, overwriting one value with another hides the question that needs review. A company page may describe a location as current while a dated announcement describes a move. A CRM with only one location field forces a premature answer unless the evidence has somewhere else to live.
Add a claim-evidence structure. Keep the operational value separate from the assertions supporting or challenging it. The purpose is not to store every sentence found online. It is to preserve enough conflicting evidence to make a consequential decision understandable and correctable.
Model claims before choosing a winner
A claim needs a subject, a precise statement, a scope and a relevant period. An evidence item needs a source, location within that source, publication timing where available, checked date and the relationship to the claim: supports, challenges or does not resolve.
Do not count repeated copies of the same announcement as independent confirmation. Record derivation when known. A later page date also does not automatically defeat an earlier source; the page may have changed for unrelated reasons, or the sources may describe different entities.
Use an explicit conflict state
The operational field can remain unresolved, retain a clearly provisional value, or be withheld from decision use according to the workflow. Define which actions the conflict blocks. A disputed operating region might block a service-coverage claim while leaving general company research possible.
Assign a reviewer and a specific resolution question. “Research more” is too broad. “Determine whether the announcement refers to the same legal entity and whether the move completed” gives the task a boundary. If the answer cannot be established, unresolved is a valid result.
Fill a fictional claim table
Fictional Rowan Parts has account ID C-91. Claim Q-18 states that its western depot remains operational. Evidence E-31 is the company's location page, checked on 20 October, listing that depot without a publication date. Evidence E-32 is a company announcement dated 1 June describing a planned relocation in September.
E-31 supports a current public listing. E-32 challenges an assumption of unchanged operations but does not establish completion. The conflict status is “timing unresolved,” and the operational record says “depot status requires confirmation.” The next question is whether the relocation completed, not which source appears more convenient.
If a later authorized source confirms completion, the reviewer records a resolution entry linking the new evidence. The previous assertions remain traceable where retention is appropriate, but the active field changes. The example is synthetic and contains no verified company event.
Preserve why the decision changed
A resolution record should include the prior state, adopted conclusion, evidence used, reviewer, date and affected downstream decisions. It should distinguish a real-world change from a correction to an earlier interpretation. Otherwise the history can invent an event that never occurred.
Do not retain unnecessary personal data merely to make the audit trail exhaustive. Summarize the material reasoning and use controlled references. If evidence contains sensitive information or raises a rights request, involve the appropriate reviewer rather than copying it into a general research log.
Test the conflict workflow end to end
Create synthetic cases where two sources describe different subsidiaries, the same event at different times, a genuine contradiction and a simple correction. Check that the system does not automatically collapse them into a single conflict category. The review action should match the actual issue.
Then test a report or export. Can a downstream user see that the active value is provisional? Does a routine import overwrite the conflict flag? Verify the actual CRM's capabilities and limits before relying on the design.
A useful claim-evidence table makes disagreement actionable without rewarding the latest edit. It should allow the team to adopt a supported conclusion, retain a bounded uncertainty or stop using the disputed fact. Hiding the conflict is not one of the acceptable outcomes.
Research access and CRM configuration are separate purchases. Leads Automation offers an independent US$15/month service and is not affiliated with LinkedIn. Confirm the actual plan, eligibility and terms; do not assume schema design, imports or integrations are included. Discuss the offer on WhatsApp.
