Track Field-Level Confidence Without Fake Precision
Attach confidence to claim versions and test invalidation after scope changes, cosmetic edits, contradictory evidence and rollback.

A confidence label remains green after a researcher changes a claim from one business unit to the whole group. The evidence has not expanded, but the interface makes the revised claim look as well supported as the original. Confidence has been attached to a field name rather than to the statement that was actually assessed.
Store an assessment against a specific claim version. When the meaning, scope or evidence changes, decide whether the previous assessment still applies. This article focuses on that lifecycle rather than introducing another scoring rubric; use the site's existing confidence guide for the underlying evidence categories.
Separate claim, assessment and presentation
A claim record needs an identifier, version, subject, proposition and scope. Its assessment identifies the exact version reviewed, evidence references, reviewer and decision date. Presentation fields can display the current status, but should not be the only place the assessment exists.
W3C's provenance overview provides context for tracing information and its origins. The proposed version model is not a W3C implementation or proof that a confidence judgment is correct. Its purpose is to prevent a valid judgment from being silently reused for a different statement.
A filled before-and-after event fixture
The following fixture is fictional and can be used to test a proposed data workflow with synthetic records. It concerns service coverage, not a real company or an observed system test.
Baseline C-24 version 1: regional unit Alder North offers weekday remote onboarding for the named service. Evidence E-7 supports that bounded statement. Assessment A-11 applies to version 1 only and records the team's supported category.
Event 1, changed scope: an editor changes the claim to the entire Alder group offering the service globally. Create version 2. A-11 does not transfer; the current assessment becomes pending review because the subject and geographic scope expanded without new evidence.
Event 2, formatting-only edit: the displayed sentence in version 2 receives corrected capitalization, with no change to its stored meaning. Record a presentation revision. Do not create false evidence of a substantive reassessment; version 2 remains pending.
Event 3, contradicting evidence: source E-8 reports that Alder North has suspended the named service. Even the historical wording in version 1 now requires a current-status review. Preserve A-11 as a dated historical assessment, but do not display it as current support.
Event 4, rollback: the editor restores version 1's narrower wording. The rollback does not revive A-11 as current because E-8 remains unresolved. Create or select the appropriate current claim version and require a fresh assessment of the contradiction.
The expected final state is not a green field. It is a narrowly worded claim with an unresolved current evidence conflict. Reverting text can repair scope inflation while leaving a separate freshness problem intact.
Define invalidation rules explicitly
Meaning changes include subject, geography, product, period, quantity and conditions. New contrary evidence or a source withdrawal can also invalidate the current assessment without changing the sentence. A purely cosmetic edit should not erase useful history, but it must not be used to disguise a semantic change.
Have the responsible reviewer classify ambiguous edits. Automated text comparison may detect changed words without understanding their consequence. Conversely, a small word such as all can materially expand a claim. Keep the decision and reason visible.
Test the consumer of the status
Check the screen, export and handoff that other teams actually use. They should not receive an old supported label beside the new claim version. Include the version and assessment date where needed, and make pending or conflicting states visible rather than substituting an optimistic default.
Test the four fixture events in an authorized non-production environment or a paper simulation. Record expected and observed behavior; do not claim the system passed unless it was actually tested. Any production changes follow the organization's approved change process.
The completed model preserves both history and current uncertainty. It lets a colleague distinguish a past valid assessment, a broader unreviewed claim and a newly contradicted statement. That distinction prevents a confidence field from manufacturing certainty simply because an old green label survived the latest edit.

Sources and scope
The example and decision artifact are original editorial proposals. Primary sources support only the narrow context identified beside the relevant claim; they do not validate the method or establish a customer outcome.
