An employer building connects to people, documents and research, not a candidate list.
An employer building connects to people, documents and research, not a candidate list.

Recruitment agency business development with Sales Navigator has a different goal from candidate sourcing. You are researching employers that may need your service and the people who can evaluate an agency relationship. A large collection of candidate profiles does not answer either question and should not become a substitute for client qualification.

Define the hiring problem you can credibly serve

Start with your actual specialization: a role family, industry, region, employment model, or combination you can support. Be explicit about constraints such as geography, seniority, delivery capacity, and the type of assignment you accept. Broad claims about filling any role make a prospecting list difficult to evaluate.

For example, an agency specializing in permanent maintenance engineers for regional manufacturers should not use the same account criteria as a firm placing interim finance leaders. Their employer research, relevant contacts, and useful questions differ substantially.

Research employers before individual contacts

  1. Build a candidate employer list that fits your specialization.

  2. Check each company's current careers information and relevant announcements.

  3. Record specific roles, locations, and dates rather than a vague label such as hiring fast.

  4. Check whether the company publishes information about agency engagement or supplier processes.

  5. Separate verified hiring activity from an unconfirmed need for external recruitment support.

A vacancy may be handled successfully by an internal team, already close to an offer, or published for a different operating entity. Several vacancies do not prove recruitment difficulty or an agency budget. Keep those conclusions out of your account notes unless supported.

If you are assessing access for employer-focused research, ask about our independent offer at US$15/month; confirm the available plan, eligibility and terms before ordering.

Identify the right client-side responsibility

LinkedIn documents Current company and Current job title search filters in its filter guide. Features vary by plan and eligibility. Use them to investigate likely employer contacts, then verify who owns agency selection.

Potential roles include talent acquisition leadership, HR business partners, hiring managers, or an owner in a small company. These roles have different responsibilities. A hiring manager may understand the technical requirement but have no authority to engage a supplier. Procurement may manage approved vendors without deciding which vacancy needs help.

Build a useful account example

Imagine fictional Riverstone Manufacturing has advertised maintenance-engineering roles at two regional facilities. Its careers pages describe shift patterns and equipment categories that match your agency's specialization. You identify an HR manager and an engineering leader, but the agency purchasing route remains unclear.

Your account brief should state the verified vacancies, why your specialization is relevant, and the unresolved engagement process. A sensible first question is whether specialist agency support is considered for those roles and who coordinates that decision. Avoid declaring that the company is struggling to hire.

If the site explicitly directs agencies to a supplier portal or says unsolicited approaches are not accepted, respect that instruction. Do not treat another employee's visible profile as a route around the stated process.

Keep candidate information out of speculative outreach

Introduce your specialization and relevant delivery experience without sharing identifiable candidate details you are not authorized to disclose. Do not imply that a named person is looking for work based on profile activity or a job change. Employer prospecting can be useful without collecting or circulating candidate data.

Review the account after contact: current need, supplier process, timing, fit, and any request not to follow up. Measure qualified employer conversations rather than the volume of profiles collected. For the next steps, use account-first qualification and a bounded follow-up plan.
