A first sales hire often inherits a founder's instincts without the context that makes those instincts useful. Turn your research approach into observable decisions. The new teammate should understand why an account fits, what evidence is sufficient and when uncertainty should be escalated.
Begin with a small training set rather than a production quota. Include strong-fit accounts, obvious exclusions and ambiguous cases. The ambiguous examples are especially valuable because they reveal where judgment is required and where your own criteria may be inconsistent.
Explain the business problem before the search process
Describe the customer workflow you help with, the conditions under which your service works and the situations you should decline. A list of industries and job titles is not enough. Two companies in the same industry may have very different operating needs.
Show how you distinguish an observed fact from a hypothesis. A public announcement may suggest an account is worth researching, but it does not prove that the company has budget or wants contact. Model the habit of writing unknown when the evidence does not support a conclusion.
Demonstrate one complete record
Work through an account slowly, explaining your source choices and stopping points. Show how you capture the business identity, relevant role, evidence link, uncertainty and next research action. Explain which information should not be collected because it is unnecessary or inappropriate for the task.
Then ask the teammate to repeat the process on a different account. Review the reasoning before correcting the fields. If the record is wrong because the definition is unclear, fix the definition rather than treating it only as an individual performance problem.
If the new hire needs research access, confirm the exact service, account eligibility and permitted workflow before assigning work. Ask about the US$15/month offer. Leads Automation is independent and is not affiliated with LinkedIn. Confirm the plan, eligibility and service terms before ordering.
A fictional training week
Imagine a small consultancy hires its first researcher. On the first day, the founder explains three successful customer situations and two poor fits. The next day, they review five fictional practice records together. By midweek, the hire researches a small set of real business accounts through approved sources, without sending outreach.
The review finds that the hire interprets a senior title as proof of purchasing authority. The founder adds a distinction between relevant role and confirmed decision responsibility. Training improves the process before the assumption reaches prospective customers.
Define review and escalation
Use a short rubric: account fit, source quality, accurate interpretation, useful uncertainty and next-step relevance. Review a sample consistently. Do not reward the number of completed rows while ignoring unsupported claims or duplicate accounts.
Give the teammate a route for difficult cases. They should know when to ask for help, what context to include and what to do while waiting. A queue of unresolved records is better than fabricated certainty, provided the team regularly resolves the questions.
Increase autonomy through evidence
Can the teammate explain inclusion and exclusion decisions?
Are facts traceable to appropriate sources?
Are unknowns preserved rather than guessed?
Are contact preferences and data boundaries respected?
Does the work support a relevant next action?
Expand the workload when these habits are reliable. Introduce customer-facing communication only with the review and authorization appropriate to the role. Good onboarding produces consistent judgment, not merely faster clicking. It also leaves the business with a research process that someone other than the founder can explain and improve.
Include service review in onboarding rather than assuming every low-cost offer fits the role. Review the US$15/month offer with Leads Automation and check whether the stated service fits your needs.
