A missing “not” can reverse the purpose of a research summary. The danger is not limited to obvious sentence errors. “No replacement is planned this year” can become “replacement planned,” while “not all sites need training” can quietly become “no sites need training.” Both outputs preserve familiar words and change the decision.

Evaluate negation as a meaning-preservation task, separate from writing quality. A fluent paragraph that reverses a restriction fails even when every company name and date is correct. The following challenge set is an original proposed evaluation, not a reported test of any model.

Build a polarity ledger before testing

For each source statement, write the subject, action, polarity, scope and time. Polarity records whether the statement affirms, denies or leaves a proposition unresolved. Scope records what the negative applies to. “Not approved for production” does not mean “approved for testing,” unless the source separately establishes that permission.

Give the model only the source packet and the summarization task. Keep the answer ledger separate. Otherwise, a model can repeat the expected answers without demonstrating that it extracted the meaning. Use synthetic passages rather than transferring private buyer correspondence into an unapproved evaluation system.

A six-case challenge set

The fictional company Meridian Calibration is reviewing equipment support. Each line below provides a source, its required meaning and a prohibited summary. The examples are deliberately short so a reviewer can inspect every proposition.

  • N1: “We do not require weekend installation.” Required: weekend installation is not a requirement. Reject: installation must occur at the weekend.

  • N2: “Not every laboratory will join the pilot.” Required: participation does not cover all laboratories. Reject: no laboratory will join.

  • N3: “Replacement is not planned before July.” Required: no planned replacement before July; the later schedule remains unstated. Reject: replacement is confirmed for July.

  • N4: “The team did not reject the maintenance option.” Required: rejection is denied; acceptance is unknown. Reject: the maintenance option is approved.

  • N5: “Training is required, but not for the reference-only accounts.” Required: training applies with the stated exception. Reject: training is unnecessary for all accounts.

  • N6: “No decision has been made about remote access.” Required: decision unresolved. Reject: remote access was refused.

A compact answer sheet contains case ID, extracted proposition, scope retained, time retained, unsupported addition, result and reviewer note. For N3, enter “replacement before July: not planned; July replacement: unknown.” This makes the difference between a lower time bound and a committed date visible.

Score reversals without hiding them

Use three outcomes: pass, meaning incomplete and reversal. A pass preserves every decision-relevant qualifier. Meaning incomplete means the summary omits a relevant clause without explicitly contradicting it. Reversal means it asserts the opposite or promotes an unknown to a decision. Both failure classes block use where the missing distinction changes a sales action.

For an illustrative output, suppose N5 becomes “Meridian requires training.” Mark it incomplete rather than a full reversal: the exception disappeared. The reviewer restores “except reference-only accounts” and records a scope-loss defect. That correction belongs in the regression pack, not merely in the edited paragraph.

Add positive controls. “Weekend installation is required” should not become an unknown merely because the test pack contains negatives. Also include one sentence with two independent clauses so the reviewer can see whether a negative spills into an unrelated fact. Balance matters: a system that declines to summarize every statement has not solved the task.

Decide what this test can establish

Run the same cases with different harmless wording and retain the raw outputs. Do not change the answer key after seeing a persuasive answer. If human reviewers disagree about a double negative, rewrite the test or mark the case ambiguous instead of penalizing a defensible interpretation.

NIST cautions against generalizing capabilities from narrow assessments. Six cases are a diagnostic starting point, not a reliability certificate. A repeated reversal should narrow the workflow to evidence extraction with mandatory review until a revised version passes relevant fresh cases. Preserve the original restriction beside the approved summary so later editors can check it too.
