Separate Partnership News from Reseller Authority
Classify partnership announcements by explicit selling, contracting, delivery and support responsibilities before adding a company to a reseller channel map.

A partnership announcement can describe a technical integration, a joint webinar, a referral arrangement, an implementation relationship, or actual resale rights. Treating every announcement as a reseller channel creates a misleading map of who can sell a product and serve a customer.
Start by extracting the responsibilities stated in the announcement. Your aim is to classify the published relationship, not negotiate its hidden commercial terms. If the text celebrates collaboration without defining responsibilities, record an announced partnership with scope unknown. That is a legitimate research result.
Read the verbs instead of the headline
Look for verbs such as integrates, refers, sells, distributes, implements, supports, and invoices. Record which party performs each action and for which product, customer segment, or geography. A phrase such as brings solutions to customers may be promotional rather than an explicit statement of resale authority.
Provider programs often distinguish relationship types. For example, Microsoft Learn: Manage solution provider partner relationships describes several Microsoft partner roles, including resellers and software vendors. That documentation illustrates why a generic partner label is insufficient; it does not establish the status of any company you are researching.
Check whether the announcement comes from one party or both. A matching announcement can confirm that both publicly describe a relationship, but it still does not reveal rights omitted from the text. Keep current provider directories or program pages as separate evidence when they address the exact role.
Apply a partnership-type decision tree
If the relationship only describes connecting products, classify the published scope as integration. If one party introduces customers to another without an explicit selling role, classify it as referral only when that wording is supported. If the material explicitly states resale or distribution, record that role with its stated limitations.
If the relationship concerns implementation or joint delivery, describe the delivery task and leave contracting responsibility open unless stated. Multiple types can coexist. A company may implement a product and also resell it, but evidence of the first does not prove the second.
Add an unresolved category whenever the wording does not settle the distinction. Avoid converting marketing synonyms into legal conclusions. If the next action requires confirmation of selling rights, obtain that confirmation from an appropriate current source before presenting the company as authorized.
Work through a fictional announcement set
Aster Software and Bridge Analytics announce that their products now exchange approved reporting data. The statement describes an integration but says nothing about who sells either product. The channel map records technical integration; resale unknown; contracting responsibility not established by this announcement.
Cedar Consulting announces a program to introduce suitable clients to Aster. Its published page says customers contract directly with Aster. The map records referral and direct vendor contracting. It does not assign Cedar subscription support or permission to access customer data.
The software vendor publishes a current provider listing explicitly identifying Delta Services as a reseller for a specified territory and product family. The map records that bounded role and the verification date. It leaves implementation, first-line support, and renewal ownership unresolved unless the listing also addresses them.
Finally, Elm Systems announces joint delivery of a migration service with Aster. The source identifies implementation responsibilities but not the commercial contract structure. Record joint delivery and ask which party contracts for each component before treating the arrangement as a single offer.
These are illustrative classifications, not claims about real partner programs or companies.
Check scope and age before using the map
Partnerships can change, and rights may apply only to a product, region, segment, or period. A global group announcement does not automatically cover every subsidiary. Record the named legal or operating entity where available and preserve uncertainty when only a brand name is given.
A missing current directory listing is a reason to verify, not proof that a relationship ended. Likewise, an old announcement remaining online is not proof of continuing authorization. For consequential use, check a current provider source or seek appropriate confirmation.
Keep customer access outside the inference
No partnership type automatically gives you permission to obtain a partner's customer list, contact its customers, use its logo, or access customer systems. Those questions require their own explicit permissions and agreements. A channel-research map should not smuggle them in as assumed benefits.
Finish with the published relationship type, supported responsibilities, limitations, date, and next unresolved question. The map becomes useful when it explains what a potential partner can actually do in the proposed customer journey, rather than merely collecting impressive announcements.
