Ask for a Referral Without Borrowing Someone's Credibility
Ask for B2B referrals with permission, precise context and an easy decline, while avoiding implied endorsements or pressure on the person making an introduction.

A referral can make an introduction more relevant, but it also asks someone to spend social capital. Treat the referrer's judgment as something to respect, not a shortcut around a prospect's attention. A good request helps the person decide whether an introduction would genuinely be useful.
Start by identifying the relationship accurately. Knowing two people separately does not mean you are entitled to connect them. A visible network connection does not establish a close relationship or willingness to make an introduction. Ask the person privately rather than presenting the connection as permission.
Explain the fit before asking for access
Describe the type of problem you help with and why you think the intended recipient may be relevant. Use verified professional context, not assumptions about private difficulties. Avoid a vague request to meet anyone who needs your service. It makes the referrer perform the research and qualification work for you.
A narrow request might concern an operations team evaluating a specific workflow. Let the referrer correct the premise. They may know that the person is not responsible for that area, that the issue is already solved or that an introduction would be poorly timed.
Give the referrer control
Ask whether they would be comfortable checking interest before connecting you. A double-permission approach gives both people an opportunity to decline. Do not add the recipient to a conversation first and ask forgiveness later. Provide a short, forwardable explanation only if it helps, and make clear that the referrer can edit it or decide not to use it.
Do not write an endorsement in someone else's voice. A factual description of your service is different from a claim that the referrer recommends you. They should choose any statement about their experience. Never imply that a mutual contact has approved your work when they have merely agreed to pass along a name.
If relationship research is part of your preparation, remember that finding a connection does not authorize using it. Ask about the US$15/month offer. Leads Automation is independent and is not affiliated with LinkedIn. Confirm the plan, eligibility and service terms before ordering.
A fictional referral request
Suppose a consultant, Lena, has completed a process review for a customer who knows several regional operators. Lena asks whether one particular operator might benefit from a short discussion about intake coordination. She explains the fit and says there is no problem if the timing or relationship makes an introduction unsuitable.
The customer offers to check with the operator. Lena sends a two-sentence description of the problem she works on, with no revenue claims or invented praise. If the operator declines, Lena thanks the customer and stops. The introduction process has respected both relationships even though it produced no meeting.
Handle the introduction carefully
When an introduction arrives, respond promptly and keep the first request modest. Acknowledge the connection without overstating it. If the referrer should no longer receive detailed correspondence, ask or follow the established practice rather than repeatedly copying them into sales updates.
Protect any information shared privately during the referral discussion. The referrer may explain a timing issue to help you decide whether to proceed. That does not automatically authorize repeating the explanation to the prospect or storing unnecessary personal details in your CRM.
Review the request before sending
Is the proposed recipient clearly identified?
Is the business relevance based on evidence?
Can the referrer decline without discomfort?
Does the wording avoid an unapproved endorsement?
Will the recipient have a genuine choice about the introduction?
Measure referral quality through appropriate conversations and respectful handling, not just introduction volume. A well-managed request can preserve a valuable relationship even when it leads nowhere. That is a better foundation for future business than treating every shared connection as a sales channel.
Evaluate supporting research access independently of any expected referral outcome. Review the US$15/month offer with Leads Automation and check whether the stated service fits your needs.
